Corridor Business Journal: Real Success — Robert Gallery, CEO of Athletes For Care

From Iowa Standout to Mental Health Advocate

The Corridor Business Journal traces Robert Gallery’s path from University of Iowa standout and Oakland Raiders / Seattle Seahawks / New England Patriots offensive lineman to founder of Athletes for Care, a nonprofit advancing research and advocacy for athlete mental health and traumatic brain injury.

The Hidden Aftermath

For years after retirement, Robert lived with cumulative neurological damage he could not yet name — memory loss, rage, anxiety, and depression. A brain scan revealed the extent of the damage, prompting his exploration of alternatives.

In 2021 Robert underwent psychedelic-assisted therapy with ibogaine in Mexico — an experience he credits with transforming his life.

“I came out of that with clarity — no brain fog, no anxiety, and no depression.” — Robert Gallery, in conversation with fellow Iowa alumnus Nate Kaeding

Building the Organization

Witnessing his own recovery and recognizing similar struggles among former teammates pushed Robert to establish Athletes for Care. The organization works to educate athletes about brain injury risks and to expand access to emerging therapeutic options. Robert is candid about wearing every hat — CEO, fundraiser, and (in his words) janitor — as he builds the relationships and research partnerships A4C needs to scale.

“My new identity is helping others.” — Robert Gallery

The piece underscores that the issue extends well beyond the NFL — affecting athletes at every level, from youth football through college.
